Project SMART Home Contact Us UNH Home Home Past Programs News History Contact Us Youth Summer Programs at UNH News and Announcements EOS Newsletter UNH Today Project SMART 2023 Dates Module Offerings Biotechnology and Nanotechnology Space Science Marine and Environmental Science Room and Board Program Cost and Scholarships Application Information Contact UsProgram Description Project SMART is a Summer Program at the University of New Hampshire (UNH) that challenges, educates, and motivates talented high school students in science and mathematics while acquainting them with the environment and resources of the University as a place for higher education and research. The 2023 program is in its 34th Year. Project SMART 2023 Pre-application Program Details Dear Student/Parent/Teachers: As you may know, many colleges and universities are still modifying their summer youth programs because of the ongoing concerns with COVID-19; especially those that involve international travel. After careful consideration, we have decided to offer Project SMART-Summer Program 2023 (Biotechnology and Society module) online via Zoom. Project SMART Summer Program 2023 will run July 10-28, 2023. The program will be offered virtually on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays, from 9:00 AM to 12:00 Noon Eastern Standard Time (US). The program fee will be $500 and partial or full scholarships will be available to those who cannot afford the entire cost. Our experience of the past 3 years has demonstrated that there is still a high degree of interest from across the globe, with students joining the program from the US, Europe, China, Bangladesh, Pakistan, India, Sri Lanka and Japan. We expect a diverse group of students from the US as well as Europe and Asia to participate again this year. Last year our limit of 25 students was reached much earlier than the deadline; so submit your pre-application early and reserve your seat today. We realize that there are disadvantages of an online program (the most obvious being the lack of hands-on lab experience), but there are advantages as well because it is available to students from many distant places with no travel costs. Although remote, students will develop international friendships internationally and the program will provide a unique experience to participants who are interested in the fields of biotechnology and genetic engineering, including the applications and social, environmental, ethical, and moral implications of these technologies. Please contact me Subhash.Minocha@unh.edu OR Lisa.Buchalski@unh.edu for questions about applying for the program. Pre-applications will be accepted until June 10, 2023. Upon acceptance of your pre-application, you will receive details for the online registration and payment of fees. I look forward to receiving your pre-application. Best regards to you all. Subhash Minocha, Director Project SMART Summer Program 2023 University of New Hampshire, Durham, NH 03824 USA Transcripts for Project SMART grades, 2018,INCO 430 Section 01 (Biotechnology) Section 02 (Marine and Environmental Science), please click here: http://www.unh.edu/registrar/grades-transcripts/transcript.html . Follow the instructions on how to request your transcript, and this also gives a link to the UNH IT Help desk if you need to retrieve your username and password. Click here for FAQ’s. Here are some frequently asked questions for students traveling by air. Who is eligible? The program is open to talented high school students who are currently enrolled in the 10th or 11th grade. What do the Participants Do? They study advanced topics in science of biotechnology and its applications and implications to our society, through lectures, discussions, and learn the process of research in this field with UNH faculty and graduate students. The Summer Program provides an excellent opportunity to learn the interdisciplinary nature of the field of biotechnology as it applies to various groups of organisms (viruses, bacteria, animals, plants, and everything in between), and the discussion of lab protocols with the scientific research behind these topics. A fair amount of time is devoted to the implications and challenges of each topic to our society, and the life on earth as we know it. Best of all, the program provides an opportunity to develop life-long friendships with your colleagues across the continents.
